So many choices…
If you are thinking of updating your floor coverings, I don’t have to tell you that there are many options. What you choose will make a big difference in the look of your home over time. Do you love carpeting? Or do you love hardwoods? Are you after low maintenance flooring? Do you like a specific look? Here are a few choices.
New carpet
The least expensive of all flooring (especially low grade) is carpeting. Frequently you will see this in rental homes because it looks great when first installed and costs little by comparison. Carpet is comforting in living rooms and bedrooms and anywhere people occasionally sit or play on the floor. Even a good quality carpet and pad will still be less expensive than top grade wood floors.
Hardwood
Bamboo is one of the most expensive floors. Those people who want low maintenance flooring will often choose bamboo as it is scratch resistant. Other hardwoods follow with varying degrees of hardness (and price) and will scratch over time. Solid hardwoods other than bamboo require some maintenance and can be refinished as needed in years ahead.
Luxury Vinyl Flooring
Luxury vinyl flooring has a variety of looks and prices. We choose this flooring for our home because it is waterproof, scratch resistant, and not slippery. We live on Twin Lake and often have wet drippy bathing suits and sandy feet walking through the house. And we have a dog. We chose a tile look of 12 inch by 24 inch pieces that lock together and float. Because the this type of flooring is intended to float, it is somewhat softer on the feet than tile.
Laminate
Snap together wood look laminate is inexpensive and has a relatively short lifespan. Laminates come in varying qualities and some upper level laminates look great. If this flooring is wet it must be dried right away or it will delaminate at the seams as shown below. We see this damaged floor type in homes frequently and when we do, buyers often say that they would have to replace this flooring right away.
Tile
Tile flooring comes in a wide range of sizes and looks, and lasts and lasts. It is beautiful. Easily cleaned and with little maintenance for the mortar, it looks lovely for years. Tile is easily repaired should a single tile crack. It is hard to the touch and I tend to drop things. I have cleaned up more than I care to share of shattered glass from items slipping out of my hands onto my former kitchen tile floor.
Vinyl flooring
This is one piece vinyl flooring we all remember. It is available in wildly varying qualities. It is easy to clean and will last for a few years. This is currently the least popular flooring and can be costly to hire installed.
